What’s New in My Book Venture?

Posted on June 14, 2026June 14, 2026 by Ms. Marcie

100 Books Sold

I am happy to share that I have sold over 150 copies of Chicago Roller Skating History: 1880-2025 and am working on my next set of 150. This is a milestone that many authors do not reach.

Book industry experts report that most authors do not sell 100 books. I did so within the first 90 days of receiving the book from the publisher thanks to my husband, the best salesperson ever, and support from the Chicago roller skating community.

My book was pre-sold (kind of) in a non-traditional way. I told skaters that I was writing a roller skating book at the beginning of my project in 2009. People would periodically ask how things were going or encourage me with “I’m waiting for it.”

But throughout this process, I cannot recall anyone ever saying, “You’re not going to do it” or “your book will never be completed.” If anything, they told me to hurry up.

Fast forward to January 2026. As I was waiting for the books to arrive, I was finally able to tell people, “It’s on the way.” Today, when people ask about the status of my book, I send a link to the website.

In addition to consistent book sales, following are new things happening in my book venture.

Book Awards

The Chicago Writers Association offers a Book Of The Year Awards to members and non-members. A fellow member asked me if I was submitting my book. Honestly, I hadn’t thought about it. But as soon as I received the call for submissions email, I completed the form and mailed my book the same day. I’ve received an email from a committee member confirming that my book was received.

A few days later I received an email from a company advertising their book awards. Unfortunately, my traditional nonfiction book did not fit any of their categories. The ad was a blessing, because it included a list of book awards for all genres on Bookbub and IngramSpark sites. I scoured those babies and found over ten awards for which my book qualifies.

Submitting my book to these award programs are definitely on my radar. Winners receive cash prizes, free publicity and other services to promote their books. In some cases, the prestige from the award is incentive enough to apply. Envision this with me: Marcie Hill, 1st Place Winner, Pulitzer Prize in Books.

Social Media

I’m still procrastinating in this area. However, Omar El Takrori, a video specialist on YouTube, encouraged viewers to create ten videos and publish them. Do not worry about perfection; focus on the quality of the content and getting started. I have scripts; I just have to record.

Book Signings & Other Events

I have not done this yet although it’s on my mind frequently. I need to call book stores and other places, select a date and show up. SIMPLE, right? So, why haven’t I done it yet?

There are a few roller skating events coming to Chicago. I’m working on some things. Send good vibes my way.

That concludes my report of what’s new in my book venture. Thanks for all your support. I’ll post updates soon.
