On Sunday, July 26, 2026, I was a vendor at the L.E.W. All White, All Night Smooth Skate Jam at Lynwood Roller Rink and it was a good experience.
I would like to thank skaters Larry and Allison for their support. And my husband, Dennis, for being my assistant, my photographer…all the thangs.
Book Sales
I sold three books.
Ms. Toya was my first book sale. We spoke briefly at the Independence Roll, a national roller skating event on July 4th , but we didn’t introduce ourselves. We connected yesterday and she taught me a bit more history that will be included in future projects.
My lesson from my interactions with Toya: introduce myself to everyone who approaches my table.
My second book was sold to DJ Shane and his wife, DJ Shiloh, both of whom are roller skate DJs. I didn’t ask about their DJ experience or how long they’ve been skating, but we’ll connect again.
Skater Ruth approached the table and asked me if I was the author of the book. When I said yes, she said,”I’m glad someone finally wrote it. I’ll buy one.” Cool. After the transaction she said, “I’m proud of you.” Well, thank you.
I was having issues accepting a credit card with my Square app because of the structure at Lynwood. Ruth directed me to a good spot where my phone would work. I entered her information manually,which was successful. But I learned several things from this experience.
First, get a Square card reader. The hardware will work when your phone will not. Second, download the QR code from Square so people can scan and purchase the book (if the technology works). Third, get a picture with everyone as soon as they buy the book. I missed that opportunity with Ruth.
Conversation Starters
I have three conversation starters.
First, my table runner with the image of the book cover on it.
Second, the clamp-on skates with the key which bring back memories for people who wore them.
Third, the people who ask, “Do you have the (name of rink) in there?” Or “Do you know about (name of rink)?”
One guy said, “You don’t know about OLG.” What’s OLG? Our Lady of the Gardens. Yes, sir, I do. I then told him what I knew about that rink.
I have a rink directory in the back of the book which lists the names of rinks only. This is where I flex my knowledge by pointing out the specific rink they are interested in.
Conversation with Gwen
I was talking to Gwen and she said someone told her about someone who wrote a book. She told the person, “If I don’t know them (the author), then they didn’t write it.” I guess it’s good we connected.
She said a few things that resonated with me. She also advised me to move in silence with the future plans I told her about. She said, “After this conversation don’t tell anyone else.” Yes, ma’am. I’m thankful for the connection and advice.
The Most Important Lesson of All
Show up. When Ruth saw the book and knew I was the author she bought the book. Toya had seen me before. Allison has a copy of my book and Larry allowed me to be a vendor for the event. To be known and supported by your ideal audience is the best situation for any author.
Conclusion
I wanted to share my experiences and lessons from the second roller skating event where I was a vendor. The book sales were blessings but the people with whom I connected were bigger blessings.
I will share information about my first vendor event soon. Here’s another lesson: write or record your story as soon as you can, otherwise it will get lost in every day life like my first vendor event.
