Over a period of two days two people told me, “Your book should have been done by now.”
Years ago, I would have allowed that statement to consume me mentally and emotionally. I would have continuously asked myself, “Why isn’t your book done?” or “why aren’t you farther along?” And then I would have tried to think of things I should have done differently, which would have consumed more time, energy and emotion.
My response to self today is: You are exactly where you are supposed to be and don’t allow anyone to tell you otherwise.
Yes, I’ve been working on my roller skating book for nearly 15 years. When I first started researching information, the goal was to seek information only. However, as I spoke to more people and conducted more research, there was enough content for a book. Actually, there is enough information for a documentary, something I’m considering for the future.
Throughout the years, my efforts towards completing my book were not consistent. My motivation sometimes waned or I researched information to the point of exhaustion. Sometimes, I felt overwhelmed by the large amount of information I gathered and did nothing.
During the periods I was not writing, I carried a draft of my book with me every day, in case inspiration hit. When I was inspired, I worked on it; when I wasn’t, I didn’t. And there were times when I just didn’t feel like working on it.
For the past four months, I have been working on my book five out of seven days, mostly editing and revising. I wanted the editor to have it by January 31, 2025, but it wasn’t ready according to my standards. BUT I am excited to share that I sent a draft of my book to the editor on Saturday, February 15, 2025.
Myron Golden, one of my favorite YouTube personalities, did a video on The Laws of Farming. He reminded viewers that Ecclesiastes 3:1 says that there is a season for everything. So, as you work on your projects and ventures, know that you are right where you are supposed to be and you will see results in the right season.
Lessons from those conversations
- Don’t listen to other people.
- Give yourself grace and work at your pace.
- You are in the right place at the right time.
- Keep moving and progressing, because you will finish if you don’t stop.
- Choose progress over perfection.
- Remember that God gave you the vision for what you are doing and only you can present it to the world.
