I was having a conversation with someone whom I truly adore, and he made more excuses as to why he’s not doing anything he claims he wants to do than the law should allow. As I listened, I was getting a bit turned off and very disappointed because he kept saying, “Nothing is happening.” Well, nothing from nothing leaves nothing.
As usual, my mental wheels began to spin. If this person could come up with that many lame excuses (and they were very sorry) in a matter of five minutes, what are some of the best and worst excuses other people have made up or heard? Lame is in a category all its own.

Of course one of the best lines ever, though not a total excuse, came from Yogi Berra who said “Nobody ever goes to that place anymore; it’s too crowded.”
I think we all make excuses for two reasons. One, we’re scared; two, we’re beaten down. It’s the second one that gets me from time to time because there’s a lot of things I’ve worked on over 11 years in business, and the majority of those things fail. But that’s just how it is in almost any business; there are more failures than successes, but one hopes that the successes will bring a lot more benefit than the failures.
I’m sure Thomas Edison felt that way. 🙂
Mitch, I understand on both accounts. That’s the reason why I didn’t have my first million at age 30 and I’m humping harder than ever to make it happen by the time I’m 40.
I’ve been reading a lot about Henry Ford and Thomas Edison lately. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.
Hey Marcie,
I’m not sure if it’s lame, but I don’t like when people use “I’m busy” and provide no addition details when they get asked a question that causes them to make a decision.
It’s a real cop out, I’d rather they say sorry I’m not interested, than “I’m busy”
“I’m busy” is by far the worst excuse ever. The people who are always saying they are busy can usually be found updating their statuses on Facebook. I have a friend who doesn’t have job but claim she’s busy. So, I’m like you. I’d prefer honesty over “I’m busy.”
I actually hate the word “Budy” or “I’m busy” because you must be helpful for everyone and whenever someone asked a question from you, you must answer them correctly and try to solve their problem, no matter how busy you are.
The worst excuse in this world is when you start apportioning blames for your own failures.
That is so true Kabelah. And that’s an entire blog series in itself.
