What would make someone walk everywhere in silence for over a decade?
Do you have the audacity to ask strangers for things with the goal of being rejected?
How about leaving a highly paid, lucrative career to follow your heart? Could you do it and be okay with it?
You will read about at least fifty of these courageous souls in The Happiness (“Happiness”) of Pursuit by Chris Guillebeau.
As I read this book, I began to ask myself, “How many people would do things they said they wanted to do if the opportunity were presented?” I’m guessing not many.
The people in “Happiness” had dogged determination and courage to complete the quests they set out to do despite what others think; despite the obstacles they encountered; or despite their financial situation. They ditched all excuses; they did not give up, even when they wanted to; and they weathered all types of storms – literally and figuratively.
But, why? For some, it was a calling; for others, it was discontent. Making the decision to follow their hearts was the first step toward happiness. Taking action was the second, and continuing on was third.
Following are my top takeaways from reading this book:
· Despite the challenges, they continued to move forward until they achieved their goals. Some had false starts along the way, but they finished. For those that did not complete their quests, they were commended for actually starting their journey. Many people don’t get that far.
· Although most people started on their quests alone, they received huge support from complete strangers who learned about their missions.
· Starting on a journey was hard. Staying on course despite challenges was harder. But working through the changes of seasons, different languages and other unforeseen obstacles was hardest.
· Everyone can see your victory but very few know about your work, sweat and tears.
· It seems as if these people enjoyed the process of completing the quest more than the goal of completion.
The Happiness of Pursuit should be read by everyone who has a urge to do something no matter how great or small it may seem. Reading about the courage and determination of others will not only inspire you, but it may actually prompt you to take action.
