I’ve written 16 posts in the frustrated job seekers series. I’ve read articles, attended webinars and watched videos on how to find a job. The truth is, there is only one thing you need to get the job you want: a referral from someone at the company.
According to an article in Quartz Media, “A candidate with such a referral is much more likely to have their resume read, land an interview, and, ultimately, get an offer.” Studies show that over 60% of job seekers get their jobs through referrals and referred candidates are hired two-thirds of the time.
What does this mean?
How to Get Referrals
Let everyone you know – and some you don’t – that you’re looking for a job, especially if they work at a company you’re interested in. Don’t discount the person’s level in the organization, you don’t know who they know and how much influence they have.
Also, ask your people to share your information with their colleagues and friends. You want to be top of mind when opportunities become available.
If you see a position on a job board, go to LinkedIn to see if you have a connection at the company. If so, ask for a referral. If not, try to connect with the hiring manager on LinkedIn.
Here’s what you don’t want to do: Deal with human resources unless you’re looking for a human resources position. HR professionals are gatekeepers and will keep you from the person you need to speak with for that opportunity.
So, to everyone reading this post, here are my requests for referrals.
Marcie’s Request for Referrals
Full-Time Job
I am seeking a full-time, permanent learning and development position downtown Chicago. However, I am open to contract and part-time opportunities, industries, and other job titles.
Freelance Writing Opportunities
I will continue to freelance when I get a full-time job. Let me know of established small and mid-sized organizations, nonprofit organizations and government agencies that need writers for their newsletters, blog posts, articles, professional bios, training materials and other writing projects.
Speaking & Training Opportunities
Following are the types of speaking and training opportunities I’m seeking. This list is not all inclusive; I am open to all events, topics, cities, states and countries.
- In-person and virtual lunch-and-learn, half-day and full-day trainings on writing, blogging, content marketing for established organizations, nonprofit organizations and government agencies
- Lead workshops and seminars for business, education and community events
- Moderator for panel discussions
- Keynote speaker for conferences, education and community events
- Present Chicago roller skating history at senior centers, libraries, schools and other venues
- Custom trainings, workshops and seminars for your group or organization
That concludes my listing of referrals, this article and my frustrated job seekers series.
