The Top 10 Qualities of Successful Writers

Which qualities do some writers possess that make them more successful than others? I have run across many people who claim to be writers, but have no evidence of published works.

Successful writers do what they have to do in light of circumstances and disappointments to get their works published. They will finish the race they started. Most importantly, they actually begin on a journey that tends to be lonely with many disappointments; but they continue until they reach their goals. And the rewards are great.

Following are 10 qualities that successful writers in all genres possess.

Open to Learning

They don’t always get their lessons and skills from a classroom.  Reading and research are essential to their lives. New topics are discovered from every day experiences, most of  which are usually simple in nature.  They are willing to try different writing styles, use different tones and speak to different audiences.

Commitment to Their Craft

These people churn out their work consistently, write articles to promote their work, and meet or exceed deadlines.  Even if they have full-time jobs, they still take the time to work on their writing projects.

They Know How to Identify a Story

Good writers can find a story in almost anything. Conversations, TV lines, and ear hustling on other people’s conversation (yes, this is very nosy) are just a few of the ways they discover stories.

Ask Lots of Questions

Some writers are just plain nosy while others are naturally curious. Either way, they get answers to the questions they are seeking. And they tend to be very creative when asking personal questions.

Consistent in Writing

Most writers write daily. Sometimes this is conscious, many times, it is not.

Persistent

The goal of any writer is to get read, published and paid.  They have to  keep writing because if they don’t they would never reach their goals. And the only way to become known as a writer is to submit pieces to different online and print publications in different industries. And do it often.

Patient

Most people are not patient. Period. However, this quality is necessary to become a successful writer. First, very few writers become well-known when just starting out. Second, patience is really developed when submitting to online and print publications. Competition is fierce, and editors do not know you. You have to stay in their faces with constant submissions. Third, the process to publish a quality book is extensive whether you are self-publishing or going the traditional route.

Optimistic

All successful writers are certain they will be published one day; they don’t know when. In the meantime, they continue to write, network and move forward in faith.

Disciplined

They figure out how to remove distractions to successfully complete projects.  This is not always easy, especially when writers work from home. Also, they allocate so many hours a day to their craft. As stated earlier, if someone works full-time, they find the time to dedicate to writing.

Resourceful

Successful writers will figure out how to get what they need if they don’t already have it. This is done through research, networking and other creative means of gathering information and meeting people.

To determine if this is true, just research a few writers and you will find that they possess most of these qualities. You too can possess these qualities if you believe in your self and NEVER give up.
