This is really baffling me because I thought that writing is my passion and purpose. Now, I’m not so sure.
Purpose Defined
Dictionary.com defines purpose as “the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc.”
Merriam-Webster defines it as “the reason why something is done or used : the aim or intention of something.”
Passion Defined
According to Merriam-Webster, passion is “a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something.” Dictionary.com says that it is “any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate.”
Passion & Purpose & My Writing Life
Based on the above definitions, I know that writing is my passion. But what is my purpose in writing?
Can it be as simple as writing to inform or entertain? Is it greater than what I can imagine or understand at this time? Could my purpose have nothing to do with writing at all? Or, am I missing what’s really in front of me?
What I love: Sharing little known or unknown information and resources.
Why I love it: Because I think people miss out on opportunities because they don’t know they exist. Also, to give people information needed to move forward. Allow me to explain. I am more likely to act on something if I had information to get me started. Yeah, I could look it up. But if a telephone number or website address is available, I would use it.
What I love: Making people shine via bios and articles.
Why I love it: Most people are humble and do not readily share information about themselves, especially their accomplishments. And I feel I am the best person to write their stories.
Those are just two things I really enjoy that I thought they were part of my passion and purpose. However, as I stated earlier, I’m not so sure any more.
What Are Your Thoughts?
What are definitions of passion and purpose?
Can you find any commonalities between the two things I love above that could define my purpose in two sentences or less?

Interesting topic. One that poses confusion for many people–especially “creatives.” Having a passion for something is different than one’s purpose. If I may elaborate here…
For example, I love cooking. I have a passion for it. Many would say that I do it well. But, it’s not my “purpose.”
Writing is.
A purpose is a “spiritual calling.” It’s a divine gift that enables us to make a difference and make the world better, through our gift. It comes naturally.
Thanks for helping me to clarify the difference, Jennifer. Every time I think I know it, something happens to make me question it all over again.
Hi Marcie,
Strolling by and what do I see? You know since I write and purpose my brand on this stuff, I had to comment. I’ve always believed that one can have many passions in life. Yes, many! For example, cooking, shopping, writing, painting and so on. But, when we have a purpose, we are being spiritually awakened or called to create something meaningful in the lives of others; Impact the world, so to speak. The beauty of being called to serve your ‘soul’ purpose, is that ultimately, one of those many passions could definitely lead you to knowing purpose. One you will do without thinking “What’s in it for me.” Follow your heart and be ready to receive that something that speaks to who you are.
Blessings,
Thanks for that insight, O Great Wise One. I told a couple people that I hope to be in a position of influence when their ventures finally kick off. Lately, the urge to interview people have been stronger. I’ve been wanting to do it but my gig was taking up a lot of time. Now that the time is a lesser issue, I think I can finally do it. I shall proceed and see what happens.
