MJM Speakers’ Circle Toastmaster Club
MJM Speakers’ Circle Toastmasters Club is by far the best Toastmasters Club in the world. How can I say this about one club in a worldwide organization that has “11,700 clubs and more than 235,000 members in 92 countries including 162 clubs in the Chicagoland area?*
Easy. I have been a member of MJM for three years. During my time as a Toastmaster, I have earned my Competent Toastmasters (CTM) and Competent Leader (CL) designations. I have also held the Secretary and Vice President Public Relations offices. Currently, I am working toward my advanced designations.
You will always find at least 15 members and guests at one of the bi-monthly meetings. Generally speaking, the club environment is positive and welcoming. Everyone who attends a club meeting is greeted with a smile, hug, or handshake. Guests that attend normally feel right at home by the end of the meeting, and either become a member of the MJM Speakers’ Circle family or come back again.
The members of this club are genuinely friendly and supportive, inside the club and out. All members pitch in to ensure a successful and productive meeting according to the agenda. They step in to fill meeting roles on short notice. They even volunteer for leadership roles even though they have other responsibilities. MJM members can also be found working District and Area events and activities. Did I mention that food is usually provided by members who volunteer to be Snackmasters?
Started in 2002, MJM Speakers’ Circle earned its first designation within the first year of inception. Currently, there are over 45 active members. Seven of the nine charter members are still active in the club. This group has accomplished a great deal since their humble beginning. Their accolades include, but are not limited to:
· President’s Distinguished designation for 4 years which means they earned 9 or 10 points out of 10 points to earn this distinction;
· Select Distinguished for two years with 5 or 6 points out of 10 points;
· Marki Lemons placed second in the 2008 District’s Humorous Speech Contest;
· Keith Fortman made it to the District level in the International Speech Contest;
· Janice Hooker placed 2nd in the District’s Table Topics Contest;
· Members of MJM volunteered to conduct TM’s youth leadership program at Julian High School in Chicago.

MJM Speakers’ Circle has the privilege of having several members who served the District including: District Governor, Charles Brooks, DTM, (5) members who have served as Area Governors, (which means that they are directly responsible for the growth and development of between 5 – 7 clubs within a designated area and have included: Frank Paink, DTM, BeeBee Maloney, DTM, Partice Harris, CC, CT, T. Marion Johnson, ACB, CT, and current Area Governor, Angela Dixon, CC, CT which demonstrates a history of serving outside the club level since the chartering of the club. Bee Bee Maloney also has served as chair of Youth Leadership which is a District Level appointment.
