I had the pleasure of attending Blogging While Brown in Philadelphia from June 1 – June 3, 2012. It was full of knowledge on how to make money from your blog; great connections with very intelligent and creative people ; and ample networking and educational opportunities. Needless to say, I am a smarter person as a result of this experience. Following is a brief summary of each.
Marcie’s BWB Experience
How to Make Money from Blogging
There were four panels at BWB12 that shared how to make money from your blog.
1. Writing and selling books. Many people write books; not many people sell them. The key to making money is to sell books.
2. Working with brands. More companies than ever are now reaching out to bloggers to help promote brands. Be sure their products are in line with your mission and your site. And get paid! These people have money.
3. Creating TV shows. I missed this session, so I can’t speak on it from a personal experience. But I attended a session at Blog World & New Media Expo a couple years ago that reported that the internet is the future of TV. And, many shows on television are now shown on the internet and mobile…do miss what others are seeing.
4. Building a business from your blog. If you really want to make money from your blog, you have have to treat it like a business, which means you have to produce quality content, market it, get advertisements. Most importantly, you have to create a brand for yourself. People are buying you, not your site. Also, creating a brand for yourself was also a presentation at BWB.
Great Connections at BWB12
People from all walks of the blogoshere attended BWB. There were people who were considering a blog to people who were earning a living from their sites. Here’s a bonus lesson: just because someone blogs doesn’t mean they are a blogger. (That’s a different lesson) on another day. However, here are a few images of the great connections made.
Education and Networking
Overall, I had a great time. The sponsors provided lunch each day, which saved the attendees money; the giveaways were pretty cool. There was also an After Party sponsored by Afrobella and Shea Radiance. So, it was just a wonderful experience, which I highly recommend.

Making money by blogging does work. I have been doing so for sometime. I can’t say I have made enough to leave my job but it does work.
