I’ve embarked on a personal mission to speak to as many of my social media connections as possible. If verbal conversations are not possible, I would at least like to engage them in “getting to know you better” emails.
This past Friday I spoke with a young lady who is writing for peanuts. I didn’t know this at the beginning of our conversation. However, as she shared her knowledge and experiences, I realized she was much like me during the first five years in my writing career: very accomplished and HIGHLY UNDERPAID.
At the end of our conversation, she said, “I’ve written the tips and advice and you gave me on four envelopes.” I’m glad I was able to help. I didn’t know the magnitude of my assistance until I got this message a few minutes after our call.
You are an incredible human being, Marcie! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to be able to help you! Have a wonderful weekend.
As I reflected on our conversation, I realized that most of the advice I gave her was based on everything I did wrong in my writing life to help her be more effective, save time and make money on her journey. In fact, my book, The 7 Practices of HIGHLY UNDERPAID Freelance Writers, was written based on those mistakes.
While sitting at church on Sunday, thinking about what to blog, I decided to do a series on my writing, blogging, self-publishing and general mistakes for the month of April. Another goal is to use several posts types from my book, 62 Blog Posts to Overcome Blogger’s Block.
I don’t know in which order I’ll post my mistakes, but here’s what I’m thinking:
Week 1: Freelance writing mistakes
Week 2: Blogging mistakes
Week 3: Self-publishing mistakes
Week 4: General mistakes
These are subject to change based on reader comments and spiritual direction.
Although I’m sharing my mistakes in hopes of helping you, I would appreciate if you share yours to help others.
