On Thursday, September 18, 2014, I volunteered to help seniors at Ace Technical Charter High School with their college statements. It was a pleasant experience.
It’s amazing what young people will share when you give them time, space and opportunity to speak from the heart with no restrictions.
Following are some of my lessons learned:
1.Mothers are the biggest influences in most children’s lives, even if fathers are around.
2. The children of this generation have gone through a lot in their lives. I could never relate or fully understand but I hope that I can help in some way, if only with a word of encouragement.
3. There is a lack of trust among teenagers today, so as adults have to be true to our words and be real when we present ourselves to them.
4. Writing training is needed in schools at all levels.
5. Some students graduate from grade school with 3rd and 4th grade reading levels. Why is that? What happened? At which level will be reading when they graduate from high school?
6. Kudos to organizations and individuals committed to young people. Continue to enrich the lives of our future.
7. Most importantly, if there is an opportunity to help young people, do so if you can. A few hours of your time can make a big difference is a young person’s life.
