Yes, I understand we are in a seller’s market where employers control the hiring process. But why does the hiring process take so long?
It is a bit extreme, in my opinion. Let me explain why.
Years ago, you could apply for a job and start working within four to six weeks. I’ve heard of companies taking six months or more to hire people. Why?? What is the point? They know if they’re interested in a candidate by the second interview.
And why are there so many interviews? Geez!
I had a 15-minute phone screen with an agency representative which led to an in-person interview with that person. Then I had an in-person interview with a representative from the hiring organization. This process took three interviews over a three-week period. And this was for a two-week assignment!
If this is being done for contract positions, how long is the process for full-time, permanent positions? How about executive positions? Hiring for temporary positions has also changed.
A hiring manager asked my friend why he accepted another position before they made an offer. It had been a month – with no communication – since his interview. Really?? Do companies actually think job seekers have time to wait around for them to make decisions that impact their livelihoods?
I am certain that many qualified applicants have missed opportunities because of the lack of action and decisiveness of hiring managers. And many companies have wasted time and lost money for the same reason.
I won’t go into a long drawn-out rant on this topic. I will wrap up by saying that the hiring process needs to be revamped and it won’t happen until hiring managers change it.
