I’m currently seeking a permanent learning & development position (previously known as training & development) and have becoming increasingly frustrated in my job search. Yes, I am a frustrated job seeker.
Note: Although I’m looking for a permanent gig, I will continue to freelance as a writer. Writing is my life.
There are several titles for this position: learning & development specialist, training delivery specialist, training specialist, curriculum development, technical trainer, training facilitator and elearning specialist. I apply for all of them.
Generally speaking, there are two aspects of training: 1) design and development and 2) delivery. In my recent contract training delivery positions, I was hired by staffing agencies to train propriety software and mobile applications to employees of their clients. However, I’ve researched, designed and developed training programs in my previous human resources positions. In fact, I developed the employee onboarding programs to ensure we were compliant with local, state and federal employment laws. So, I’ve done it all.
One thing I haven’t done was conduct training needs assessments. I’ve never had to do this because I worked at smaller companies with small HR departments, and the directives to conduct training came directly from the c-suite. I am perfectly capable of doing this.
Based on my job search experience over the past few years, I have several questions and have made several observations that, if I had answers, may reduce my frustration. If my frustration isn’t reduced, at least I (and other job seekers) would have a better understanding of the job search process.
Thus, for the next few Fridays, I am going to publish my frustrated job seekers series. I don’t how many weeks the series is going to be and I don’t what it is going to look like right now. I just know that I need to share.
If you are a frustrated job seeker, feel free to ask your questions and leave answers in the comment box below. Your question may become the next blog post.
