Here are 12 freelance writing truths I learned throughout my eight-year career:
- Writing is a lonely profession; you work on your own 99.9% of the time.
- There’s no career ladder.
- You have to trust your judgment.
- There are no degrees in freelance writing so the quality of your work have to speak for you.
- Competition is fierce, so you have to learn how to market yourself and get in front of people that can write checks.
- Experience is your best teacher.
- You have to treat your writing venture as a business.
- There are tons of articles and tips on how to write correctly; how to pitch publications and companies; how to get paid; and how to market your services.
- You can get a writing mentor or coach to help inspire and guide you.
- Join in-person and virtual groups to keep your writing mojo going.
- Writing is one of the few professions where something is created from nothing, but no one wants to pay for that priceless service. Get paid for your innovation and creativity.
The greatest truth of all:
If you want to be a successful freelance writer, keep writing, keep marketing and press toward your dream.
