Most people find it hard to work at a cluttered desk, but a cluttered computer could be just as much of a problem. While digital clutter may not be noticeable to others, it can still have a negative impact.
A cluttered computer often runs slower. You may also have trouble locating files because information gets lost more easily. In order to reduce stress and stay organized, following are several ways you can digitally declutter.
Ways to Digitally Declutter
Organize Your Inbox
Many people have no method of organizing their inbox. When dealing with work-related emails, this could lead to emails being ignored or not replied to at the right time. Developing a folder system for your inbox can help you priorities emails that are important and filter out ones that aren’t important. This could include having a ‘reply today’ folder, a ‘reply this week’ folder and a ‘reply this month’ folder, as well as a ‘FYI’ folder for information purposes.
Try to read every email as soon as you get it so that you can file it into the appropriate folder or take action straight away. You don’t have to delete old emails that are no longer of use, but digitally organized them.
Delete Files/Data You Don’t Need
Unused information – old work documents, unwanted photos and forgotten mp3s –could be taking up valuable space on your computer; delete it. Other sources of data, like cookies and application memory, could also be cluttering up your PC.
As this article demonstrates, Mac computers can have hidden sources of data taking up space. Deleting this information could help your computer run faster and improve the speed of your work.
Simplify Your Folders
You may also want to get rid of empty folders that may have been accidentally created and make sure that all other files have a clear theme and a name (not just ‘new folder’).
Streamline Your Software
Many people have downloaded software on their computer they never use. Removing these programs could free up disk space and make your desktop less crowded. In the case of business software, you may be using several programs a single solution would do. You could even invest in your own custom-made software to meet your needs.

Hi Marcie,
I would resoundingly say, yes, we all need to declutter our digital marketing processes as some files and data one might have stored for ages are no-loner needed. In a situation like this, you have to let it go. I already share it on LinkedIn and Twitter.
I totally agree, Moss. I’m currently decluttering physical and digital files. I hold on to files and other stuff thinking I’m going to “use it again” or “need it one day” and neither of those situations happen and I’m stuck with “stuff”. Getting rid of stuff is also helping me emotionally.
