For the longest of time, I have been trying to figure out what makes me different as a writer. I have always known what they were, but I was afraid that my main difference would scare prospects away. Honestly, if the truth scares people away, I probably shouldn’t be working with them anyway.
So, here are eight things that make me different as a writer.
1. My knowledge of black people’s experience in America
I have been reading books by black and white authors; talking to my elders; and watching different documentaries highlighting black people’s contributions to making America the powerful nation it is today.
Despite all of our accomplishments, we are still largely ignored in society and underpaid in the workplace. We are mistreated, stereotyped, under-represented and misrepresented on so many levels.
If there are companies bold enough to address the black experience in this alleged “post-racial” America, I am ready to partner with them. Here’s how I can help:
- Conduct focus groups with African Americans. Since companies are not coming to our communities, I’ll do the work since I can relate.
- Write or blog about their diversity and inclusion efforts, not just with African Americans but with all ages, races, nationalities, sexual orientations, genders, etc.
- Report about their community relations activities, especially when they are focused on African American interests.
On a side note, they should hire more qualified black people and promote the ones they have based on performance and not on stereotypes and unconscious prejudices.
2. Impeccable research skills
I can connect the past to the present to create an amazing story. I try to my best to find little details that make stories pop.
Just to toot my own horn, there are very few people I know personally that conduct as much research as I do.
For example, roller skating has been in America since 1865, started in Chicago in 1871 and there is very little information in writing on this subject. I am pleased to report that I have found over 50 roller rinks in Chicago from 1871 to the present. And I ain’t done yet.
3. I love interviewing
I enjoy interacting with people and providing a platform for people to share their stories. Check out my interviews here.
4. I am super creative
In addition to writing and blogging, I have pretty good photography skills. I’m going to take classes soon to learn more about lighting and compositions; black and white photography; and pet photography. I also enjoy scrapbooking and card making.
5. I love learning
What I don’t know, I will take time to learn it. For instance, I know I need to learn how to write effective press releases, impact white papers and the art of copywriting. I don’t mind learning these things, but I need help. I also want to dabble in humor writing.
6. I love gaining and transferring knowledge
Writing, blogging, social media and photography are just a few skills I possess. Because I love technology, it won’t take much time for me to learn new programs.
I also enjoy transferring my knowledge and skills through training. Hire me to train your staff and students to build their confidence in writing, blogging and creativity.
7. I am persistent, goal-oriented and deadline driven

8. I’m good at brainstorming ideas
I’ve always wanted to get paid to think. Just let me know when and where you want to sit down and generate ideas, and I can assure you at least 5 good ideas during our session.
These are things that make me different as a writer. Now, I just need help positioning and promoting myself.

YOU shouldn’t concern yourself with what others think so much as what you know to be your truths! I agree with all of those self assessments, but you are also supportive, encouraging and focused on achieving your goals. No doubt you will see your goals to fruition.
Shine on sistah girl, shine on!
Thanks so much for those words of encouragement. They are much needed and very timely. I’m working on positioning and promotion right now and I want to be on point.
You are right on point and even just writing this and having given thought to what makes you different, makes you different! 🙂
Thanks for that, Kesha. It took a long time to get to this point and even longer to gain the confidence to speak it. However, I am about to use my differences to make a difference.
