I started blogging in 2008 because a representative from Black Enterprise told me to do so as a way to get my writing career going. That was the year I left my job to pursue my dream of being a magazine writer. Initially, I didn’t know what to do but I’ve learned and grown along the way, and I love it.
Here are the four greatest benefits of blogging for me.
It’s My Platform
When publications ignore or reject my story ideas, I still have a place to post my works where they’ll be read. When I think something is off with my stories, I can post them on my blog and get feedback. When I want to try new stuff, my blog is my platform to do it.
Also, because I own my blog, I post what I want, when I want, how I want.
I’ve Gained Courage
I am speaking more boldly on topics that are important me that could be considered controversial in nature, such as the under-representation and misrepresentation of black people, especially black women, in the media. I also like to spotlight black people in history and other unknown or under-reported people, places, events and facts.
My courage has grown to a point where I really feel that I can help keep black history alive and relevant. I don’t know how this will look right now, but I know it’s possible.
I’ve Grown Personally
Tact is not my strength so I do a lot of self-editing when blogging. Also, I’m gaining more wisdom on what to post publicly, what to speak publicly and what to keep among my friends, family and journal.
I’m More Creative
In addition to embracing visual elements and appreciating video online, I have started trying different styles of writing. I look at scrapbook paper differently; watch YouTube for photography tips; and have gained a great interest in creativity. How can I help people get in touch with their creative self?
My Newest Reason for Blogging
While all of these benefits are great, here’s my newest reason for blogging: It’s my online legacy.
If I died today, people would still be able to read about me and my life, well, at least until my hosting plan ends.
So many people die and leave no written accounts of their lives. Their families scramble to gather information about them for their obituaries. That part of their family history is just gone.
Although the Marcie Writes was created to be my online portfolio, I hope visitors to my site get a feeling that I am trying to help them along their writing and blogging journey. I hope they are learning more about me as a person, writer and dreamer. Most importantly, I hope they are inspired to do and be the best at whatever they aspire to.
What About You?
What is your reason for blogging? Has it changed over the years?

Hey Marcie!
At the risk of going all maudlin on you (and please erase that word as soon as you read it! LOL) … I love all your reasons for writing, especially the new one. In fact, I don’t think you get enough exposure (online) for the excellent education, sharing and encouragement you offer.
While that thought is fresh in my mind, I want to invite you to the Bloggers Helping Bloggers LinkedIn group, where you’ll not only meet like-minds and interact in new genres, but where you will find that the members are committed to actually visiting, discussing, and sharing one another’s work.
You’ll have to login to even see the group, but do it today. I’ll also pass your name along to one of the mods.
Write on!
Hey Vernessa! Thanks for stopping through and sharing that resource for me. I appreciate you recognizing my efforts to help others; sometimes I feel like it’s in vain…but I do know that people are reading. I’m going to join that group today.
Nah, not in vain! Hope to see you in the group. Once you’ve been approved, don’t forget to add this post to this week’s roundup.
Cheers!

Hey H
I don’t blog but I do invest in and record toward my legacy. Great reminder. Thanks
and pride.

Hey P! Thanks so much for stopping through. Great to hear from you! Your legacy is well documented in the books you’ve written and the encouraging words you speak. I’m sure you are remembered every where you go.
Congrats on how far you’ve come, Marcie. Folks online and off already know your name and what you stand for. Keeping shining and sharing and building on your legacy!
Clara, as usual, thanks so much for encouraging me to be my true, authentic self.
