In addition to reading, writing and blogging, history is another love of mine, particularly Black History. During this month I would like to encourage you to watch at least two Black History movies; read at least one book with at least 100 pages; and attend at least two events. So, here are my recommendations for movies, books and events.
Black History Movies
- 10,000 Black Men Named George – A tale about the Pullman Porters
- Betty and Coretta – Betty Shabazz, the wife of Malcolm X, meets Coretta Scott King, the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Eyes on the Prize: The Civil Rights Years – Get the ENTIRE series. It’s amazing and very eye opening
- The Rosa Parks Story – The biggest lesson from this movie is that that Rosa was not the first person to get arrested for refusing to give up her seat. However, she had connections that made it possible for her case to reach national levels
- My Friend, Martin – educational cartoon about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Black History Books
I started getting my books from the juvenile section of the library, thinking that the books were going to be less than 100 pages with lots of pictures. Uh, no. All of the books are a little over 100 pages with few pictures. But the information is great so I read on. Here are some of the amazing people in Black History that I’ve read about.
- Carter G. Woodson
- Booker T. Washington
- Jan Matzeliger
- Sojourner Truth
- Ida B. Wells
- W.E.B. DuBoise

Black History Events
Try to attend at least two black history events this month. Many libraries, churches, community organizations and schools are honoring blacks in history. Check local online and print publications to find out what’s going on.
More than anything, though, continue to spread the word about the significant contributions that black people made to American history.
