Book Review: The Renegade Writer’s Query Letters that Rock

Every now and then you need a reality check to let you know what you’re doing wrong. Well, The Renegade Writer’s Query Letters that Rock: The Freelance Writer’s Guide to Selling More Work Faster was my reality check.

Authors Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell provided a comprehensive overview list of query letters that rocked. They opened  with frequently asked questions, which is great because all new freelance writers pretty much ask the same ones. Actually, many seasoned freelancers have these questions, too, as insecurities rear their ugly heads at the darnedest time.

Just when you think the book is good; it draws you in even further. The authors include real samples of query letters pitched by real people and accepted by real editors of big name magazines. Commentaries from the writer and editor are shared.  This is very valuable for freelance writers at all stages in their careers.

I noticed that many of the magazines have big names which could be a challenge to get into as a newbie. Okay, I think it’s more intimidating than challenging. I wonder how many new freelance writers have submitted query letters that were accepted on their first try. How many editors of big name publications actually take time to respond to submissions?

Many of the magazines in the book are actually on my “dream” publication list which is great. I now have an idea of what they expect in their submissions.

Essentially, the key to freelance writing success, like any other venture, is persistence. And follow-up. I need to step my up my game so I can my name can grace the bylines of these publications. I don’t care if it’s the online or print version; I just need to see it.
