I’ve heard several people say they wanted to be writers, radio broadcasters, voiceover artists and videographers. Some of these people have had experience while others were speaking from the desires of their hearts. What these people don’t realize is that they can kick start their dream careers with social media tools. And, many of these tools are free. All that’s needed to get started is a little knowledge and courage. Following are ways you can use social media to make your dreams come true.
So You Think You Can Write?
If you are an aspiring writer, you can jumpstart your career with a blog or status updates on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or other social networking sites. Every time you tell what you are doing via status update, you are microblogging. The only difference between blogging and microblogging is the character limitation. A blog, on the other hand, requires a little extra work to set-up and keep going. But if you are truly serious about writing, that shouldn’t be a problem.
Is Acting or Movie Production in Your Future?
YouTube has created a lot of “accidental” celebrities like the Mentos guys and Justin Beiber.
Acting, videography, producing, video editing, and scriptwriting are just a few things you can do to make your acting or movie production dream come true. Of course, you can always gather your equipment and live stream events with Ustream, Live Stream or Justin.tv so your audience can see events in real-time. Either way, this could be the beginning of a promising future – if only online.
Have a Voice for Radio?
Having your radio show is as simple as recording your thoughts and uploading them to the computer. With blogtalk radio, iTunes and other podcasting software, you can fulfill your dreams of being a radio host, sportscaster or voiceover artist. If a voice recorder is not in your spending plan, most mobile phones are equipped with voice recording capability. Use it to start working toward your goal.
Keep in mind that you do need the necessary equipment to start your ventures. It doesn’t have to be expensive; it just has to be effective. Also, you can get lots of ideas on how to develop content for all of these ventures in 62 Blog Posts to Overcome Blogger’s Block.
Since most of the social media tools are free, why don’t you kick start your dream career today?

Aha Marcie, you’ve written it again. You know, most people have formed the habbit of letting minor excuses hinder their way towards achieving what they desire which very bad. I believe there is always a better way of doing anything, its only for you to find out because when the disireble is not availabe, the available becomes desireble. Therefore just as Mercie has advised, don’t let the excuse of not having a blog hinder you from becoming a writer, you can always make use of the free tools out there until you’re able to set up your blog which is very necessary.
Thanks for sharing Marcie.
Theodore, I like when you said, “when the desirable is not available, the available becomes desirable.” In this case, all of these tools have free options that can get you started. Even if people don’t like them, they could at least use them to get started.
People “Micro Blog” everyday in the form of Twitter and Facebook, this ebook would be great as a way from them to turn the dream into a reality. Pity thier is no one place these people congregate.
Simmeon, you gave me an idea. I can possibly use my Overcoming Blogger’s Block site as this congregation place.
Marcie, thanks for reminding us of the many options. I recently stepped out of my comfort block–to get into public speaking. I was amazed at how my writing skills provided a major edge. Thanks for reminding us to grow where we are planted!
Hey Gloria! Believe it or not, I thought about you earlier today because I was going to go to Markham but decided to complete my application for this competition instead. And here you are! Wow!
And blessings on your speaking journey. Let me know if you need help with your speeches. I’m working on my 3rd designation in Toastmasters so I know a little bit I can share.
Hey Marcie,
I saw you on my blog and that was wonderful. I could not just leave without checking out this article you linked.
As a matter of fact, I was just doing me things in PHP. I never thought one day I’ll be writing and blogging. The desire came when I developed the http://EasyRetweet.com tool for bloggers. This brought me closer to many great bloggers. I started reading their articles here and there. That’s how I developed the interest and today, I’m loving it every minute.
The three free tools you mentioned for us (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) are key tools I use to spread the word. I wonder what would have happened if they were not available.
Great post Marcie, Everyone can start their dream career using social media tools. People can do anything using social media tools like If they can do anything which others can’t than they can promote themselves on Youtube.
I have been writing on my status updates on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, but later I decided to start a blog and now I do write about topic in which I’m passionate about in my blog.
Great share Marcie 🙂
Ehsan, thanks for sharing your experience as evidence that you can in fact kick off your dream career with free tools. And thanks for showing us the transition from status updates to your own blog.
