This question, “What would you do if you were not afraid?”, was asked in a YouTube video and my thoughts raced for at least three hours after I read it.
This is a very thought provoking question, because fear is one of the main reasons people don’t pursue their dreams or reach goals. And I will admit that I have been stagnant in my pursuits for that reason, especially my photography.
I have been dabbling in photography since my mother gave me my first camera as a child. I’m ready to take my skills to the next level with private event photography and headshots. I’m less afraid to pursue photo projects because my friend and mentor, Joe Sims of QLT Photo, is guiding me on this journey.
One day he told me, “You have to be ready just in case you get hired for a big event.” Big event? I’m a lone rookie with a camera. How am I supposed to handle a big event? That scared me. I told him that I would have to turn it down because I’m not ready for a project of that scale. He said, “No, you don’t. You have a team.” Whew! That made me feel much better!
I was able to overcome my fear for several reasons. First, I have a mentor helping me on this journey. Second, I had to decide the type of photography projects I wanted to pursue, which helps me to better target my audience and create messages that speak to them. Third, I have the equipment needed to be successful with private events and headshots. Fourth, there are several videos and articles on this topic, which provide tips and resources. Yep, I am now ready for my photography projects.
What about you? What would you do if you weren’t afraid?
