Anyone considering a job as a writer should be aware that it is not the kind of work which promises riches beyond your wildest dreams. People often say that writing is a case of feast or famine: either you earn six figures a year or are completely broke.
It is true that you may struggle with making money as writer until your income grows. But you don’t have to starve. To avoid choosing between feast and famine, here are ways you can supplement your income as a writer.
Teaching
If you want to make ends meet while building your writing business, think about teaching at a local school. You can serve your local community as you pursue your dream of writing.
You can teach anything you want, as much or as little as you want, especially if you become a part-time cover teacher. You can teach a subject you’re passionate about or something you want to know about. The best way to learn about it is to teach it. It would be ideal if you could be an English Literature or Creative Writing instructor to enhance your writing abilities.
To start teaching, consider taking classes from a trustworthy institution like Rutgers Online and start applying to schools in your area. You may also have to get a teaching certificate.
Blogging
It’s always wonderful if you can supplement your writing with yet more writing. Blogging is a great alternative income stream.
In order to monetize it, you have a number of options. One particularly attractive option is to write eBooks, which you can sell on your as stand-alone products. Online courses are another way to make money from your blog. You can also consider affiliate marketing and sponsored posts.
Editing
Start a career as an editor would complement your writing career perfectly. You can do this part-time if you find the right role; offer services a freelancer; or start your own publication. Either way, it’s more money in your pocket and you will improve your skills as a writer.
Copywriting
It’s always nice to have a writing-related side hustle and copywriting is one of the most popular ways people do this today. In the past, copywriting meant writing advertising or marketing copy for businesses. Today, writers are creating content for online properties like websites, blogs and landing pages.
While you can choose online writing over traditional copywriting, you will earn more doing both.
