Authors are writers, not marketers, which is why they don’t sell as many books as they could. Although marketing is a challenge for authors, it’s a skill that can be learned. To make this process a little less intimidating, following are six marketing tools you can use to spread the word about your book.
Marketing Tools All Authors Should Use
Your Book
This should be obvious; sadly, it’s not. Your book is the best marketing tool you have and you should carry at least one with you at all times. Instead of telling people you’re an author, show them your book and explain what it’s about. Answer any questions they have and let them know where they can buy it. If you’re really convincing, they may buy the one you show them.
Your website is your book’s online home. It should include detailed information about the book; a bookstore to sell your book; book reviews and media interviews; a listing of places where your books are sold. Don’t forget to include upcoming book events. Make it very easy to buy your books and to contact you.
Yes, your bio is a marketing tool. People will want to know about you, the author. Let them know how the book came about; your professional background; and any other information that attracts people to you and your published masterpiece. This information can be on the About page of your website or a PDF document that can be emailed upon request.
Postcards
Your postcards should contain a summary of information that’s on your website: a summary of the book, details about book, book reviews, where and how to buy it, and a photo of the book cover. Be sure to include your contact information and website address.
Social Networks
With all of the social networks available, how do you choose where to promote your book? Go where your audience is. Creatively market your books using videos, audio, memes and photos.
You want to build a database of people that are interested in buying your book and newsletters are the best way to do this. In addition to letting them know about new developments with your book, use to host book giveaways, promote fellow authors, as well as share tools and resources.
