I took Spirit Airlines to New Media Expo in Vegas. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. The non-stop flight was reasonably priced; the staff was courteous; and they got me to and from my destinations in one piece. However, there were six ways Spirit Airlines broke my spirits.
6 Ways Spirit Airlines Broke My Spirits
1. $3.25 Water
I was having a coughing spell on the flight home and I asked the flight attendant for a cup of water. She responded, “A bottle of water is $3.25.” Are you freaking kidding me? Not a good look.
Lesson: You cannot afford to choke on Spirit Airlines
2.One Personal Item
You can only carry one personal item aboard the plane. While I get this requirement, it was a big ass inconvenience for me during this trip because I had my laptop for the expo. I had to figure out how to stuff my food into my laptop bag without messing up my equipment.
Lesson: Get creative with packing your luggage or buy a netbook so this won’t be an issue
3. Baggage Fees Will Pimp You
The baggage fees are ridiculous. As you can see, they have 24 different fees and it costs $100 if you check your baggage at the gate. And these are for standard bags! It costs more to check a carry-on bag than a checked bag. God forbid if you have heavy luggage, which costs more.
Lesson: See the lesson in the previous section
4. Cost for Advanced Seat Selection
I don’t know if this is a common practice for airlines, but I thought this was the the dumbest s*** ever. That’s just me. I guess it makes sense for people who want to get on and off the aircraft first.
Honestly, I don’t really care where I sit because I’m going to sleep. My three hopes as I board airplanes are that
- My seatmate doesn’t want to talk to me during the entire trip (I want to sleep, remember)
- My seatmate doesn’t snore
- My seatmate doesn’t stink
Lesson: Check-in online early and this may not be an issue
5.Pay for Snacks?
Can we get some peanuts or animal crackers or something?? I’m just saying.
Lesson: Bring yo’ own s**t and make sure it fits in the one personal item you carry on the plane
6. No 800 Number
I wasn’t ready for this one: an airline company with no 800 number. I guess I assumed all airlines had toll free calling.
Lesson: Never assume
Those were the six ways Spirit Airlines broke my spirits. I would use them again but they wouldn’t be my first choice.
How About You?
Have you ever flown with Spirit Airlines? What was your experience?

Hi Marcie,
I was cracking up while reading this. I’ve only flown United, Delta and Southwest. Southwest had better amenities, free drinks/snacks at the time about 2 years ago. They do stiff you with those darn baggage checks though;(
The airlines make a fortune with their fees for everything under the sun.
You’ve been posting up a storm- very good info.!
Clara, I only have two words about Spirit Airlines – Last resort!
